Saturday May 6th, 2000 was the start of the 19th Cornbelt Running Club 24 Hour run and Regional RRCA championship. With 60+ degrees at the 7:00 a.m. start and not a cloud in the sky, fifty runners from fourteen states and Canada took their mark and set off an a day long adventure. The weather forecast was for a high of 85 degrees, high humidity, and a chance of a thunderstorm in late afternoon. As one would guess, runners and walkers could not escape the full sun shine and insulting winds on the 400 meter all weather track in Eldridge, Iowa.
Several runners took off at a blistering pace not apparently noticing the temperature or trying to bank some miles before it got really hot. While runners grew increasingly uncomfortable, the volunteers seemed to enjoy their task. The field larger than last year, had ample supply of grizzled veterans and new faces, although the way everyone was running, it was hard to tell who was who. By noon the temperatures had taken a toll on the field and people were clearly just hanging on when dark clouds rolled in from the south. By 3:00 p.m. a quick rain, would send runners scrambling to cover their supplies and the temperatures dropped a good 10 degrees. One by one, the runners seemed to pick-up some enthusiasm for their task, and soon nearly everyone was running again.
Weather did not stop several runners from trying to capture national age group records. Sixty year old, Ed Rousseau of Minnesota went to work quickly on his goal of a 100k record. Canadian Barbara McLeod, 62, tried to stay comfortable as she too considered a new Canadian record attempt. Eugene Barker, a young 69 year old from Kentucky, also waited to see how high the temperatures would climb. Ed's attempt was the closest to a record however it was not meant to be. Ed did not give up easily. Despite cramps in his leg muscles caused by heat and dehydration that forced Ed into a short break in the medical tent, Ed came out of the tent ready to continue his effort after recalculating the pace needed to get back on track. Within the hour, his efforts were abandoned. "The rain came too late for me." noted Ed as the cooler temperatures would remain throughout the evening and into Sunday.
Tim Johnson, Wisconsin, a newcomer to this race and 24 hour novice, took careful rotations between running, walking, eating and hydrating. Winner of four out of the last five races here, Bill Seldomridge played a careful, thoughtful race as he turned over lap after lap at an incredibly steady pace. Tim ran out front all day, while a pack carefully waited their turn which was never to be. Past winner, 60 year old, Al Edmunds of Ohio just kept coming and would sneak by once Bill had left the track for good. Local area runners, Ron Warner and Scott Hoag both improved their personal records.
The women's race had a number experienced runners. Content to enjoy quick naps and refreshing rest periods, the women's race was not to be determined until the next morning. Trail runner - turned track runner, Nikki Seger of Chicago, Illinois, showed her usual perseverance with grace and complete control on the track with her first win at a 24 hour run.
It was a good effort by many on a very difficult day. Back to the main page:
